Studio diary: a week on Rosecrest Avenue

By Nancy Hicklin · PaintBot Studio, Richmond VA

A quiet week in the PaintBot studio, from Monday morning proofing to Friday afternoon crate-packing.

Monday

Proofs go out first thing on Mondays. Nancy opens the queue at eight and clears it, cup of coffee at the elbow, by lunch. This week: a golden retriever named Biscuit, an elopement in Charleston, a set of six small watercolors for a family reunion.

Wednesday

Wednesdays are stretching days. Devon and Amelia lay the cotton over the pine bars, staple from the middle out, and check each corner for tension. There is a very specific sound that a properly stretched canvas makes when you tap the back — low, dry, hollow. We listen for it.

Friday

Fridays are crate-packing days. We double-wall every crate in reclaimed cardboard and slip a handwritten note between the two layers. The largest crate this week is going to a customer in Melbourne.
